  • Technically Speaking: Training – What’s Best for Your Shop & Technicians
    Sunday, July 1, 2018 12:00 AM
Training today is radically different from what it was even a few years ago. In the old days, technicians would wrap up work early and head for a training class sponsored by someone at a local parts store or technical school. Those days, although not gone, are very rare indeed.
  • Muffler & Pipe Advice - Never Give Up!
    Sunday, July 1, 2018 12:00 AM
I heard a saying long ago that, “if you want something that you have never had, then you have to do things that you have never done before.” This is so true in life, let alone business, but wedged in between those two lines is a never-give-up attitude.
  • Photo Tech - Getting the Steering Wheel Straight After Wheel Alignment
    Sunday, July 1, 2018 12:00 AM
If you have the latest and greatest, most modern alignment equipment out there, your job of getting a straight steering wheel is relatively easy and almost 100% assured unless you fail to follow the operating instructions on the equipment.
  • Bulbs & Wiper Blades – Can You Afford Free Installation?
    Friday, June 1, 2018 12:00 AM
This edition of Technically Speaking® is going to make people hate me more or love me more than they do normally. Realize that many retail auto parts stores today offer free installation of wiper blades if you buy the blades from the auto parts store. Is this a good deal? The answer in some situations is, “Yes.” Is this a removing-frustration deal? The answer in almost all cases is, “Yes.” Customers hate installing wiper blades.
  • Your Management Consultant - What’s Your Brand?
    Sunday, July 1, 2018 12:00 AM
Branding has been around for a very long time. Ancient Egyptians are thought to have invented branding as early as 2700 BC. The purpose was to differentiate their cattle from others. Modern businesses use branding for the same purpose, to differentiate their products from others. Effective branding creates equity and adds value, so that you compete on that value and not on price. This value also creates emotional attachment with your ideal customer. When your customers feel like this, they will drive past countless other shops on their way to your shop because you have built a brand that they trust.
  • Management Matters - Hiring Without Tears (and Hopefully Lawsuits)!
    Sunday, July 1, 2018 12:00 AM
About 11% to 12% of smaller businesses face a discrimination lawsuit every year based on a limited number of reports. According to studies, some states are worse than others for the employers. But you must assume you are at risk. That alone should make a few minutes with this article valuable.
  • Management Matters: Caught You!
    Friday, June 1, 2018 12:00 AM
According to the National Federation of Independent Business, some 30% of employees may well be stealing from you today. They go on to say this number increases if an employee is given the motive and opportunity. Using some data provided by the 2017 study by Hiscox, the dollars are not small. One employee could be stealing thousands right off your bottom line. In the next few minutes we’ll take a look at the issue, who tends to be responsible and strategies to deal with the problem.
  • How Effective Is Your Labor Rate? Do customers care?
    Friday, June 1, 2018 12:00 AM
The automotive repair industry has evolved so much. Years ago, it was a simple trade that was fairly straight forward. Today, we are involved in a technological profession that is becoming more complex and demanding every day. The equipment, technology and tooling required for a modern shop are far more expensive than ever before. Shop owners and managers will tell you that keeping up with the demand can be all but impossible.
  • Mother Roadster - Shops Chip in to Help Shriners
    Sunday, July 1, 2018 12:00 AM
Like any major fundraising project, it started with an idea – raffle off a custom 1932 Ford High Boy for 20 bucks a ticket to raise money for Shriners Hospitals. It’s a great idea, but how do you kick it off? Well, the idea sponsors of the project started knocking on the doors of the various talented automotive shops asking for their help and expertise. Many who agreed to help, in turn, contacted their peers who specialized in different aspects of the build.
  • Tenneco and Monroe: Extensive Testing & A Passion for Quality Make the Difference
    Sunday, July 1, 2018 12:00 AM
When a motorist is informed by an auto-repair shop that their vehicle requires a water pump, the customer seldom requests a specific brand. Normally the shop makes the selection. When it comes to selecting shocks and struts, Tenneco®, manufacturer of Monroe® Ride Control products, wants that service provider to know why Monroe should be the top recommendation whether the customer asks for one or not, said Joe Bacarella, manager of technical assistance for Tenneco.
  • JR Discount Muffler & Brakes and Mechanic Shop
    Sunday, July 1, 2018 12:00 AM
It’s been more than a year since James Price retired and handed the keys to JR Discount Muffler & Brakes and Mechanic Shop to his son Shane. The younger of the Prices notes that his father set the framework for the shop to continue, and Shane has made a point of putting his own touches to the business.
  • Hasty’s Service Inc., Toledo, Ohio
    Friday, June 1, 2018 12:00 AM
First impressions can be confusing when you pull into Hasty’s Service Inc. The six-bay service-station architecture is reminiscent of an era gone by. The old-fashioned image ends when motorists enter the small shop with a clean and comfortable customer-waiting area where they are usually greeted by Bob Hasty, current owner. Although, old-time personal attention is still part of the shop’s charm.
